A New Image for Cancer Care Northwest
August 21, 2008—Klündt | Hosmer created a new visual identity package for Cancer Care Northwest, one of the region’s leading cancer centers providing comprehensive, innovative, compassionate care by a team of integrated cancer specialists.
To communicate their patient-centered philosophy, Klündt | Hosmer designed a visual brand to convey hope and healing within a caring, integrated environment.
The design consists of a stylized logo mark made up of two leaves crossing in front of a burst of energy. The blue in the design exudes medical excellence and advanced innovative technology, while the green communicates healing and rejuvenation. The figure at the center reinforces the focus on the whole person, and the mark strongly implies that Cancer Care Northwest is a “place of healing”—physically and emotionally.
Klündt | Hosmer is currently working with Allison Benjamin, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Cancer Care Northwest, on the creation of additional marketing materials including a patient folder kit, marketing brochure, informational rack cards and direct mail piece. A new web site will also be in the making.

How to Take Advantage of a Looming Recession
August 21, 2008—You can’t get away from the media talking about our declining economy. It’s a common reaction to think you should hold back on your own branding and marketing plans until you “see where the economy is headed.”
While fear of the unknown is understandable, cutting back on marketing during a downtime is actually the wrong move and a missed opportunity.
When other businesses rein back on their advertising and marketing, that’s the BEST time to implement or increase your branding and marketing efforts. Research is filled with examples of companies who gained substantial market share and sales by increasing their advertising spending during recessionary times.
Unless your services or products are completely superfluous, consumers will continue to purchase what you and your competitors have to offer. But in a tighter economy, they will be more discerning regarding who they buy from. When your competition reacts fearfully and lessens their marketing efforts, they are clearing the stage for your marketing to be seen. When they cut back, your continuing brand messaging has a greater impact.
Before you allow a bad economy to hinder your business success, think about dialing up your company’s branding and marketing strategies to enable your business to GROW even during a recession.

A River Runs Through Us
Rafting through the Spokane Valley. Illustration by Rick Hosmer.
July 24, 2008—The Spokane River is the heart of our region. This month, Rick Hosmer paddled 111 miles down the Spokane River from Lake Coeur d’Alene to its confluence with the Columbia River. Along the way he created drawings that were used by the Spokesman Review and other media to promote the trip. The expedition was sponsored by The Spokane River Forum as a way to introduce people to the unique resource and unique responsibility we have to the river and our aquifer. You can see more of Rick’s river illustrations online. A KPBX public radio story, including an interview with Rick, can be heard here. When you get there, just click the Spokane River Float link.

A New Image for the Northeast Community Center
July 24, 2008—When the Northeast Community Center asked Klündt | Hosmer if we would help create a visual identity for their new facility, we saw the opportunity to make a positive impact for their organization and the community at large. Working with Jean Farmer, Executive Director, and members of the Northeast Community Center’s logo committee, we created a new visual image for the organization and facility. The symbol communicates how the facility’s services weave together with business partners and the community to offer achievement and success. Klündt | Hosmer is pleased to have helped the Northeast Community Center with this pro bono design.
Paine Hamblen Launches New Web Site
June 26, 2008—Paine Hamblen LLC is one of the most established law firms in Washington State. They recently underwent a corporate rebranding and found themselves with a web site that no longer represented the firm and its new look. They hired Klündt | Hosmer to improve the design and functionality of their online presence.
Working closely with key Paine Hamblen staff and attorneys, Klündt | Hosmer developed the creative direction for the project, designed the look of the site, edited the writing, and art directed attorney photography by Dean Davis. Navigation is handled by cascading drop-down menus, enabling all of the site content to be accessible in just a couple of clicks. Posterized black and white photography brings a unique and memorable look to the site, and an animated image-sequence on the home page brings the site visitor to Spokane, through downtown streets and directly into Paine Hamblen’s main office.
In a project wrap-up email from Keith A. Trefry, Paine Hamblen Partner who managed the project, he shared that “Klündt | Hosmer and the Paine Hamblen team worked well together and we reached the finish line with a great, new web site that we are really excited about.”

Designing History at the MAC, then Great Falls
May 29, 2008—In 2005, Klündt | Hosmer designed the David Thompson exhibition for the Northwest Museum of Arts & Culture. The exhibit featured Thompson’s original sketches, journals, paintings, mounted artifacts, and reproductions of maps and text about his explorations into Western Canada and the Inland Northwest. Thompson was instrumental in developing the Spokane House fur trading post in 1810 and mapped much of the Columbia River region.
Last year, Klündt | Hosmer was contacted by the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Interpretive Center in Great Falls, MT to create additional display panels about William Clark and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Center used some of the Thompson panels from the MAC exhibit along with the new panels created about Clark for a combined interpretive exhibit.
The exhibit in Spokane was widely attended, and the exhibit in Great Falls is still open to the public.

Scoring for Rypien With a New ID
February 21, 2008—Klündt | Hosmer recently developed a brochure for the Rypien Foundation, a nonprofit organization helping local kids and families battling childhood cancer. Before creating the brochure, Klündt | Hosmer kicked-off the organization's branding efforts by designing a logo and stationery package for the Foundation.
The logo design consists of the letter "R" and the image of a football flying through the air. The image is strong and supportive, with a powerful visual reference to Mark Rypien, the organization's founder, and his successful NFL career which culminated with his winning the Super Bowl XXVI MVP title while with the Washington Redskins. Mark lost his young son to cancer and formed the foundation with co-founder Randy Brawner, to help families with children fighting this life-threatening disease in the Inland Northwest.
Mark Rypien states, "I am very proud of our logo. It is a strong, memorable identity that represents us perfectly, and we learned a lot about ourselves through the process."
Klündt | Hosmer is very proud to be a supporter of the Rypien Foundation and the important, compassionate work they do.

A New Web Site for Berg Co.
February 21, 2008—Berg Co. came to Klündt | Hosmer needing to revamp their web site so it looked and worked better. Due to the increased use of online advertising in their industry, the client’s highest priority was to make the site function better in search engines through organic search engine optimization.
We identified that the web site needed to have an industrial, progressive, yet historical feel to it and convey that the company is dedicated to “green” manufacturing processes and is a technology leader. Through use of color, photography and staying product-focused, the new Berg Co. web site communicates these messages to a wide audience and the client has already seen an increase in organic search results.
John Scherer Takes Us to Kenya
February 21, 2008—When John Scherer of The Scherer Leadership Center arrived in Nairobi, Kenya, his luggage didn't arrive at the same time. Fortunately, he had his stylish Klündt | Hosmer t-shirt in his carry-on. While certainly not as colorful as the clothing worn by his Maasai friends, John was able to work side-by-side with them on a village water project... and look good doing it while his luggage caught up to him in the bush.
Klündt | Hosmer has worked with John for over 15 years, providing branding, collateral, book illustration, and training materials for his company. We have also gained a lot through participating in his executive development and leadership programs. You can learn more about John and his work at www.scherercenter.com.
If you have a Klündt | Hosmer t-shirt take it on your next adventure. Snap a photo of yourself wearing the shirt and send it to us. We will include it in a future edition of “In the Spotlight.”

A New Image for Metals Fabrication Company
December 13, 2007—Klündt | Hosmer recently developed a new visual identity for Metals Fabrication Company, a dependable resource of structural steel since 1966. To communicate their tradition and philosophy, Klündt | Hosmer designed a visual brand to convey an established and sophisticated-friendly feel that alludes to a modern, forward-thinking, technologically-advanced company.
The new logo design consists of the letter “M” created by two steel I-beams coming together in perspective. The image reinforces the product and strengthens the brand recognition in a very bold, memorable way. The design exudes excellence and reliability and communicates very clearly the specific market niche of Metals Fabrication Company.
Metals Fabrication Company is located in west Spokane, and specializes in high rise, medical, biomedical and large commercial structures. Their primary market is in the western United States, including Alaska and Hawaii. Some of their recent projects in Spokane include the new Spokane Convention Center, Gonzaga McCarthy Athletic Center and the new Spokane Air Traffic Control Tower. This New Identity is a Real Party
November 15, 2007—When George Balling and Mary Lancaster decided to leave the Sonoma Valley and open a high-end retail store for dinner party enthusiasts and wine aficionados, they made their move to northern Idaho and hired Klündt | Hosmer to design the store’s visual identity.
We really got into their vision for the store, and created a brand identity system that communicates the essence of The Dinner Party: a purveyor of high-quality, unique and stylish accoutrements, and wine for hosting the perfect dinner party.
The logo’s shapes and colors bring energy and movement to the design, maintaining a simplified beauty and projecting the creative essence of the store.
Next on Klündt | Hosmer’s design plate is the development of the store’s web site, wine boxes and store signage.
Look for The Dinner Party retail store opening soon in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

A New Image for the Kalispel Tribe—the “Camas People”
August 22, 2007—Klündt | Hosmer is proud to serve the Kalispel Tribe of Indians on visual rebranding and promotional projects for the tribe and some of its various enterprises.
Recent projects have included creation of a new visual identity for the tribe, and assisting with the naming and visual branding of the new Camas Center for Health and Wellness on the reservation near Usk, WA, and for Camas Path—the tribe’s education and individual growth program. Klündt | Hosmer also designed and developed a new web site for Cortona Shotguns, a division of Kalispel Case Line.
The new logo for the Kalispel Tribe features the sturgeon-nosed canoe that is unique to the Kalispels. This canoe is being paddled by two tribal members in front of the silhouette of Kalispel Peak. These elements visually communicate the strength of Kalispel tradition and history, while maintaining a course for the tribe’s very promising future.
The success of these identity projects comes through working closely with members of the tribal council and with other key individuals in Kalispel leadership. Klündt | Hosmer thanks the tribe for the insight and forward-thinking that they have shown while working with us.
Jean and Logan Attend Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver
August 22, 2007—Last month I attended the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Denver, Colorado with Logan Olson. She appeared on stage with Kevin Turner, Microsoft COO, during his keynote presentation to thousands of Microsoft partners from all over the globe. Turner shared the inspiring story of Logan Magazine, a fashion and lifestyle publication for young people with disabilities; a project that Klündt | Hosmer has teamed with Logan to create. The third issue of the magazine just delivered from the printer last week.
As I sat in the audience and watched Logan receive two standing ovations, I felt so proud to be part of the visual communication industry. The message was clear—design and technology can make a difference in people’s lives, helping them be independent and discover new worlds. So, on days when I might feel that what we do “doesn’t really matter” in the big picture, I just remind myself of Logan, her project, and her vision, and how what we are doing together resonates and touches the lives of people all over the world.
—Jean Klündt

Klündt Hosmer Turns 20!
August 22, 2007—It was twenty years ago today, when Darin taught the band to play.* Well, actually twenty years and a month ago, and it wasn’t really a band, just Jean and Darin closely joined by Rick. Can you believe it? We’ve been doing this for over twenty years. A lot has changed -- computers, the internet, cell phones and (thank God) our hairstyles! One thing that hasn't changed is our commitment to quality design and customer service.
Klündt | Hosmer started in 1987 in a little studio in the Flour Mill . Today we are proud to serve some of the finest companies in the world with design that competes with the best the industry has to offer.
We have been so blessed with our company, our clients and the most amazing group of creative people (the Fab 15) ever assembled. It just keeps getting better. We are excited to be starting the next 20 years!
*Sgt. Pepper was actually the one who taught the band to play.
Klündt | Hosmer Develops Brand for New Winery
July 17, 2007—Klündt | Hosmer recently developed the name and visual identity for one of Spokane's newest wineries: Vintage Hill Cellars.
Vintage Hill founders, Cody George and Brian Murray, started making wine as a hobby in Cody's basement in 2002. They realized the potential for starting a new business when friends frequently requested bottles of their wine to take home after dinner parties. Cody and Brian came to Klündt | Hosmer desiring a premium image for their promising business venture. Darin Klündt and Lorri Johnston worked closely with the partners to develop the name, logo, and wine labels. Family honor, pride, distinction, and rich heritage are all qualities projected by the Vintage Hill Cellars brand.
Vintage Hill Cellars recently opened its doors to the public and sold out of two of four of their newly released varietals in a matter of days. Now, a couple of months later, they are almost out of them all. You can reach Vintage Hill Cellars at 509-624-3792.
Rick in Catalyst Magazine
July 17, 2007—Spokane Business Catalyst Magazine published an article by Rick Hosmer in their July issue. The monthly publication is geared toward business leaders and explores technology, lifestyle, and strategies for success.
The “What Works for Me” column highlights a regional business leader who shares what they have learned in their career and personal life. Rick was asked by editor, Amy McCaffree, if he would write the July column.
Rick’s article covers eight “truths” of life and interpersonal relationships that he has discovered “work for him.” Following is an excerpt from the column:
It's not about what happens TO you.
In spite of how “in control” or “powerful” you may feel you are, many of life’s challenges happen outside of your influence. I find it wise to remember, “It’s not what happens TO me that matters; it’s what happens IN me when something happens to me. That’s what matters.”
Spokane Business Catalyst is available by subscription or on newsstands throughout the region, including Auntie’s Bookstore, Hastings, Borders and Barnes & Noble in the Valley. You can read Rick’s entire article online at www.sbcatalyst.com.
