August 2010—Bussey Endodontics, Klündt-Sargent Wedding, KH Employee PHoto Shoot

Need a Root Canal in Virginia?

When Bussey Endodontics in Virginia needed a new visual brand and website for their practice, Dr. Lisa Ellingsen of Ellingsen Endodontics in Spokane Valley (a Klündt | Hosmer client) referred her friend Dr. Kelly Bussey to Klündt | Hosmer.

Working via phone and online presentations, we designed a brand identity for Bussey Endodontics and expanded that brand into a website design that promotes the services available in their two office locations in Virginia Beach and Chesapeake, VA.

The website presents an overview of the doctors and services, and enables dentists to submit patient referrals through an easy-to-use online form.

Timeless Design Carries into Wedded Bliss!

When your parents are graphic designers, rest assured that the invitation part of wedding planning is covered. So, when Darin and Jean Klündt's son Ben got engaged, the fun began! Jean and Diane Mahan drew inspiration for the invitation from the famed Boston landscape designers, the Olmstead Brothers, who in 1886 designed the garden gates on the grounds of Bozarth Mansion, where the wedding ceremony was to be held. The garden gate graces the front of the invitation, and a garden theme runs throughout the invitation package and program.

The fun and celebration continued on July 30th, 2010 when Ben and Lauren tied the knot in the beautiful garden courtyard of the 124-year-old estate where, 25 years ago this summer, Jean and Darin exchanged their own wedding vows.

Congrats Ben and Lauren!

Dean Davis, Making Us Look Good!

We recently had fun shooting new staff portraits with Dean Davis in his studio. The new images will be used in project proposals, our website, press releases and other media that might need photos of our smiling faces. Of course, we ended up with a beautiful gallery of nice images of each team member, but there's always the fun outtakes we just couldn't pass up sharing. Enjoy!

July 2010—Gonzaga, Spokane CVB, Strategic Research

Gonzaga Invites Students to "Be Inspired"

Klündt | Hosmer recently completed the latest 60-page undergraduate admission view book for Gonzaga University. This 2010-2011 edition is an update of the previous version, with fresh articles, colors, images and updated academic information throughout the book to present high school juniors and seniors the options and benefits of applying to Gonzaga University.

Inspiring and fun photographs were shot by on-campus and local photographers, including Dean Davis, and were incorporated into the view book design. Klündt | Hosmer has guided the design and production of the past four view books for the university. Carie Weeks, Assistant Dean of Admission, wrote and managed the project.

The design for the view book is being incorporated into posters, brochures and other undergraduate admission materials for Gonzaga University.

Strategic Research Refreshes Web Presence

Building on the visual brand and website that Klündt | Hosmer created five years ago for Strategic Research Associates, we recently completed a next-generation website project that updated the visuals and functionality of the site. The update included incorporating a content management system that allows the client to maintain their own content and keep their site updated for visitors and for search engine optimization.

The project was a success and Dean Moorehouse, President of Strategic Research, was happy with the results. He told us: "I really like the refreshed site, and working with you again renewed my appreciation for the excellence you bring to the design community. Thank you!"

1.8 Million Eyes on Spokane

The new 30 second spot began airing on June 22nd and will run through the summer. This energetic spot features a family of 5 talking about their recent trip to Spokane and includes clever cuts in dialogue and video with a custom music score. Nearly 2 million viewers in Oregon, Idaho, Washington and Montana will see this spot as it airs during peak demographic times. Online content advertising reflecting the look and feel of the spot will appear during that same time and will direct web traffic to SummerInSpokane.com.

June 2010—Wheatland Bank Spot, Spokane CVB Visitors Guide, Avista Wall Display

What's Wheatland Bank Made Of?

Building on the ad concept we developed for Wheatland Bank last year, we created an innovative :30 second TV spot to connect primarily with business owners in need of lending from a bank in a strong financial position.

The campaign asks "What's Your Bank Made Of?" and uses animated words that are derived from the letters in Wheatland Bank's name. This is a compelling way to tell the story of Wheatland Bank while keeping their brand at the center of the message.

Mike Bold and our friends at Hamilton Studio helped us produce the TV spot, which is being implemented through a regional TV campaign. The concept was also incorporated in a regional print and outdoor advertising campaign, as well as in-branch messaging. You can view the TV commercial on the Wheatland Bank home page.

With amazing photography, fantastic editorial, beautiful design and informative maps, this year's visitors guide is by far the most comprehensive guide to the region. The perfect-bound publication highlights cultural, recreational, golf and family activities available in the Spokane area.

A great team comprised of creatives at Klündt | Hosmer, Jeanna Hofmeister, Spokane Regional CVB Vice President and Director of Destination Marketing, and CVB staff, worked to design and produce the guide.

Get your guide while they're hot!
Avista Annual Report Theme Makes Impressive Wall Art

As you saw in last month's Spotlight email, the 2009 Avista Annual report theme "Energy for a Smart Future" has been well received. It has now found its way into several other applications, including a wall display at Avista Corporate Headquarters that Communications Manager Jessie Wuerst asked us to assist with. It was fun to take the elements from the book and design them at a larger scale to create a visually impactful wall display. The vinyl graphics behind the panels set the stage for the "Innovation Forward" timeline pieces to be read about on the boards-all important parts of Avista's history, demonstrating their philosophy of innovation and sustainability. The display was debuted at the Avista Annual Meeting of Shareholders on May 13th.

May 2010—Spark Winners, Hamilton, Avista, Ness

Hamilton Studio Helps Make "Logan" Beautiful

Klündt | Hosmer has been committed to Logan Olson and her magazine, "Logan" for several years. A critical aspect of the quality of this publication is the professional photography that is provided pro bono by The Hamilton Studio.

Don Hamilton has been supportive of Logan and her vision since the beginning. For each issue, his team works with our art directors in shooting the cover photograph of Logan and interior images as needed. They donate many hours to each issue, helping make a positive difference in the lives of young people living with disabilities.

The Hamilton team is awesome to work with. Logan tells us, "The Hamilton Studio makes me feel like I'm the most beautiful person on earth!"

Thanks, and a "High Five" to Don, Lorna, Matt and Michael for capturing Logan's true beauty: her spirit!

Avista's Energy for a Smart Future

This year, Klündt | Hosmer once again partnered with Communications Manager Jessie Wuerst on the Avista Corp. annual report. With the theme of "Energy for a Smart Future," the 2009 report features imagery rendered in an illustrative, whimsical, earth-friendly style. Anne Ogle, the daughter of Avista employee Brad Ogle, appears throughout the piece representing Avista's future of sustainable energy. Our team art directed, designed, proofed and managed the project, and worked with J. Craig Sweat Photography and Ross Printing.

The 127-page print publication, along with the online presentation, delivered on a tight schedule and with stringent requirements. The design and messaging have been well received and are now being used on other collateral materials and signage within Avista headquarters.

Shepherds College Flocks to Klündt | Hosmer

Shepherds College is a small, specialized, Christian college in Wisconsin that offers education and life skills training for students with intellectual disabilities. We introduced this client to Spotlight readers in our January 2010 issue.

After a couple of months of work, we completed and launched the college's new website. Our team worked closely with Shepherds' staff in writing, designing and programming the new site. A video produced with Mark Forman is a featured component, along with details on the college's programs and statements from administration and faculty on what makes Shepherds College such a special place.

The new site has received rave reviews from board members, parents and Shepherds staff. Susan Griffis, Shepherds College Director of Marketing, emailed us right after the site went live saying, "Thank you! The site is beautiful! Everyone did an amazing job on both the site and the video. When starting this project, I prayed for God to show me who He wanted to work with Shepherds College, and I have NO DOUBT that I heard Him correctly. You're a gifted team of people and I feel very blessed to partner with you. I can't wait to see what you do with the rest of projects!"

It's difficult to receive higher praise than that - Thanks, Shepherds College, we are honored to work on these inspiring projects.

Kaniksu Sands is a waterfront community located on the shores of Priest Lake, ID consisting of private custom homes, condos, and a planned beachfront clubhouse. The client needed to promote awareness and sales of the development by attracting potential buyers to their website and open house events.

A series of 4 ads was created, showcasing the beauty and activities of the area and creatively playing on well-known sayings and themes. The ads ran in the Spokesman-Review, Coeur d'Alene Magazine and Lands & Home. The campaign resulted in very strong open house attendance and interest, and has set the branding and image for this unique lakeside development.

February 2010—Second Nature, SL Start, Steve Johnston

Second Nature’s New Website—A Breath of Fresh Air

Second Nature Wilderness Programs is a nationally recognized leader in wilderness therapy for pre-teens, adolescents and young adults. The organization operates programs in Oregon, Utah and Georgia.

After redesigning Second Nature’s brand image and a series of program brochures, we created a website conveying the organization’s key messages to their target audience. We used natural colors and artifacts, wilderness photography, Flash® animated brochures, Google maps and content that guides the visitor to learn how Second Nature’s programs can help their family.

A Parent Portal is accessed via secure log-in, providing parents 24/7 online updates regarding their child’s progress in the program and current photos of their child in the wilderness.

A new Google Adwords campaign and search engine optimization strategy was implemented, improving the relevance of the visitor finding the site via online search.

SL Start Brochure Promotes Unique Services

SL Start is an organization that helps people with developmental and physical disabilities achieve independence and obtain skills training for gainful employment. They provide services for children and adults in over 26 cities throughout Washington and Idaho. Klündt | Hosmer is proud to have worked with SL Start for over 20 years developing brand image, print collateral, advertising and online marketing for the company.

We recently developed a new Corporate Services brochure for SL Start. The 8-page “Hope Starts Here” brochure was designed, art directed and written by Klündt | Hosmer and printed by Johnston Printing. The brochure introduces the company, outlines its services for children and adults with developmental disabilities, as well as highlights employment training.

The brochure is part of a comprehensive marketing and communications package developed with SL Start staff, including a series of service sheets and a new website that will launch this spring.

Johnston Lands Big One Under Pressure

We have worked with Steve Johnston at Johnston Printing for over 22 years. His team does a great job printing brochures, stationery packages, posters, catalogs and other publications for our clients. We have been on thousands of press checks at their facility and know how well they handle the pressure of our quality expectations and deadlines.

Besides sinking a perfect putt on the golf course, one of Steve’s loves is flying. He has been a private pilot for years.

On Monday, February 13, Steve was on a routine solo flight over Lake Coeur d’Alene. When at 700 feet the plane’s single engine lost power, Steve had to come up with options... quick. Capitalizing on integrating his love of flying with his love of golf, Steve glided the plane down and made a perfect emergency landing on the 9th fairway of the Coeur d’Alene Resort golf course.

We have seen Steve and his crew work under pressure many times, but this landing was notably his best effort yet. Definitely worthy of a drink at the clubhouse. Steve, we’ll put you down for a hole in one.

After the mechanic worked on the plane and the FAA cleared Steve, he flew off the end of the fairway and into the history books. Fortunately, he cleared the water.

January 2010—HOTSTART, Mt. Spokane High School, Shepherds College

A BRAND NEW START FOR HOTSTART

For nearly 20 years Kim Hotstart's logo has reflected the company's brand essence. It has helped them grow and thrive in their competitive market, however, the marketplace has changed and become more global. When CEO Rick Robinson decided that it was time to address this he contacted Klündt | Hosmer, who designed the previous corporate identity. We worked with Desautel Hege Communications to learn about the new business environment and what it would take to present a new image that would position the company for the future.

The new logo evokes an established, yet modern feel that builds on the old logo's brand equity. The company dropped "Kim" from its name, which paired with the new look presents a responsive, approachable and innovative image.

Along with the new logo, Klündt | Hosmer designed a new trade show exhibit, brochure, business cards and website, all conveying the company's new visual brand. We are currently working on additional branding materials to be rolled out in the coming months.

MT. SPOKANE HIGH SCHOOL GETS NEW LOGO

Klündt | Hosmer recently designed a new logo for the Mt. Spokane Wildcats. This logo design creates an image that is striking, unique, strong, first-class, proud, and steadfast. It is representative of the high school's teammates, fellow students, and the greater community. Klündt | Hosmer is proud to have helped improve the school's visual image and wishes to thank Dave Nelson of Land Expressions for his contribution to the project.

WE'RE TWITTER-PATED WITH NEW CLIENT SHEPHERDS COLLEGE

Located in Union Grove, Wisconsin, Shepherds College discovered Klündt | Hosmer via Twitter when @LoganMagazine tweeted about our design of the lifestyle magazine for people with disabilities.

Shepherds College is very unique in that they provide higher education and spiritual growth opportunities for young adults with developmental or learning disabilities. These students want to prepare for a career, but a typical college or university might not be the right fit for them-Shepherds College meets their particular needs.

Shepherds College needed a new website and recruiting materials to promote the organization's offerings to potential students and their parents, as well as serve as an information resource for current students, families, alumni, supporters and higher-ed professionals. They hired Klündt | Hosmer to produce this work.

Jean Klündt recently flew to Wisconsin to art direct photography and video for use in their website and print promotions. We are excited to build a successful relationship with this great client!

September 2009—CVB Web Traffic, Empire Health Foundation Logo, Spokane Eye Clinic Site

KlÜndt | Hosmer Helps Increase Spokane Regional CVB Web Traffic by 123%

As part of the Spokane Regional CVB advertising campaign, we implemented a search engine optimization (SEO) and pay-per-click (PPC) strategy to drive traffic to their website. These efforts, coupled with an aggressive social and traditional media campaign, have nearly doubled the unique site visits to www.VisitSpokane.com.

Year-to-date traffic at the beginning of August 2009 had already passed total web traffic for all of 2008, and the number of sites linking to VisitSpokane.com has doubled as more sites are using VisitSpokane.com, the official destination website, as the trusted authority for anything related to the Spokane region. This additional web traffic creates more visibility, allows visitors to quickly find destination information, book hotels, and brings in additional tourism dollars to the Spokane region.

For more information on how we can increase your website traffic through effective SEO and PPC campaigns, please contact us.

Empire Health Foundation's New Logo

Last fall, Empire Health Services was purchased by Community Health Systems, a publicly traded hospital system. The net proceeds of that sale are being managed by the Empire Health Foundation (EHF) to ensure that the charitable health and wellness mission of Empire Health Services lives on for Eastern Washington.

Klündt | Hosmer worked closely with Desautel Hege Communications and the EHF Board of Directors in creating a visual identity for this new foundation. The design depicts Washington State with a customized medical care caduceus symbol strategically centered over the region served by the foundation. The logo conveys a sense of health, regional inclusiveness and trust.

The new identity was unanimously approved by the Board and will be implemented through the organization's identity package, website and other brand communication materials.

Focus on Spokane Eye Clinic's New Website

Partnering with Hill & Knowlton, Klündt | Hosmer recently developed a new website for Spokane Eye Clinic. The site was designed not only to support and reflect the clinic's new visual brand family, including Spokane Eye Surgery Center and Spokane Optical, but also to allow easy access to important information, and give site visitors a pleasant website experience. The site highlights the clinic's doctors and their specialties, along with information about eye care and a handy contact lens re-reorder form. See for yourself at www.spokaneeye.com.

August 2009—Spokane International District, Kaniksu Sands, Maryhill Winery

It’s a Small World (with Big Ideas)

Klündt | Hosmer is proud to have assisted the newly-formed Spokane International District with the development of a visual identity to represent the neighborhood.

Working with Spokane City Councilman, Mike Allen along with a group of East Sprague business owners, we created a design that visually compiles 9 international flags into one flag to represent the different nationalities, cultures and businesses that reside in this unique Spokane neighborhood.

Klündt | Hosmer's work has helped put a "face" on Spokane for the past 22 years. We are pleased to have added one more "face" to the family with the Spokane International District, whose goal is to create a vital, successful urban business neighborhood extending along the Sprague corridor from the Hamilton Bridge to Havana St, next to the University District.

For more information about the Spokane International District, check out their website.

Escape to Kaniksu Sands at Priest Lake

Creating a website for Kaniksu Sands, Priest Lake's newest waterfront community, was a natural fit for Klündt | Hosmer. Most of us have personally spent many delightful seasons in and around the lake, so when Fred and Ruby Johnston of Kaniksu Sands called on us, we were very excited. The community offers discriminating cottage and condo owners the exclusivity of a private residence with the amenities of a sophisticated lakeside community located on one of the most pristine lakes in Idaho.

Maryhill 2009 Winery of the Year

Congratulations to our friends Craig and Vicki Leuthold, owners of Maryhill Winery, who were recently recognized as the ‘2009 Washington Winery of the Year' by Wine Press NW and the ‘Best Destination Winery' by Seattle Magazine. We are very proud of the work we have created with Maryhill over the years and are happy to be a part of their great success!

July 2009—Why Spokane? TV Spots Feature Marmots

Klündt | Hosmer had a blast working on the new broadcast advertising campaign for the Spokane Regional Convention & Visitors Bureau. Local marmots, Stan and Benny, try to figure out why so many visitors come to Spokane.

The spots were concepted, written and directed by Klündt | Hosmer, with additional direction from the CVB. The video crew at Cornerbooth Media handled the talent and shot the footage by the Spokane River near Gonzaga University. Two different scripts were written and recorded to the same video edit. The :30 second spots are airing on television stations throughout the Pacific Northwest, Canada and western Montana, and are being promoted on VisitSpokane.com and YouTube.

Why DO so many people come to Spokane, anyway? Watch the spot and see what Stan and Benny think.

June 2009—Wendle Logo, Spokane Eye Clinic Logo, Windows Doors & More Site, SRCVB

Wendle's New Logo Packs Horsepower

Wendle Motors has been strategically utilizing the new brand we developed for them, by featuring it on their business cards, branding materials and advertising (it looks great on the Wendle apparel, too!). The new design has a classic, retro feel that is unique to the automotive industry. It conveys the warmth and caring quality of the family-owned business.

Spokane Eye Clinic's New Brand is 20/20

Klündt | Hosmer recently partnered with Hill & Knowlton on a rebranding effort for the Spokane Eye Clinic. The new look conveys a contemporary message of full service quality eye care with a visual impression that is professional, clean and technological. The new logo will be featured on their new building and website, both coming soon.

Take a Look Through the ‘Windows Doors & More' Website

Windows Doors & More is one of the Northwest's premier retailers of window and door products for contractors, architects and home owners. They saw the website we developed for Cascade Windows, one of their supplying manufacturers, and tracked us down to redesign their own site.

With showrooms in Seattle and Redmond, and customers throughout western and central Washington, Windows Doors & More needed a sophisticated website, fitting of the high-end homes that utilize their products.

Klündt | Hosmer designed the site, featuring landscape images from the Pacific Northwest; interactive service, quote and feedback forms; and an interactive "page-turning" product catalog.

The site is maintained through a content management system that enables Windows Doors & More staff to update their page content.

Once again, Klündt | Hosmer partnered with Communications Manager Jessie Wuerst on the Avista Corp. annual report. The theme for 2008's book is "The Power Behind Green Thinking," which is also featured in an online version of the report. Our team art directed, designed, proofed and managed the project, and worked with J. Craig Sweat Photography and Ross Printing.

The 127-page print publication delivered on a tight schedule and with stringent requirements. It has received many wonderful responses. We are very proud of this work with Avista Corp.

Many of you know Dean Davis as a fabulous commercial photographer and art patron in Spokane. But there is more to Dean than great photography and gallery openings. Dean recently launched a new business, Dean Davis Editions, which specializes in fine art digital (Giclée) printmaking on a number of substrates that have an archival life of over 200 years.

Klündt | Hosmer designed and produced the Dean Davis Editions website. The site features artists galleries, online print ordering, and a blog where Dean shares his insights on art, photography and archival printmaking.
April 2009—Kalispel Tribe, Rick in China, ADDYs, Gonzaga

A New Website for Kalispel Tribe

Klündt | Hosmer recently launched a website for the Kalispel Tribe of Indians, which follows our design of the tribal brochure, communicating a “Past, Present, Future” message.

The website includes many pages of information—written with assistance from Desautel Hege Communications—and presented through a well-organized navigation system. Photo galleries showcase current-day and historical images, and a multi-view calendar of events lets visitors know what is going on with the tribe. The site also includes employment and charitable fund areas, both of which are used on a regular basis by the general public.

The site is implemented through a content management system and will be updated by tribal staff. A future section of the site will include Salish language audio resources, historical heritage content and other information of importance to Kalispel tribal members.

Rick Visits China with GSI

Rick at the Lingering Garden, Suzhou, China

A few weeks ago, I returned from a trip to China with a group of 64 local business people and family members. The trip was organized by Greater Spokane Incorporated and the International Trade Alliance. Its purpose was to introduce Americans to Chinese culture and present possible business opportunities with China.

We spent four days in Beijing, touring the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, hiking the Great Wall, viewing the Olympic Village, and touring local businesses and manufacturing facilities. One evening we had a meeting with other U.S. business owners and representatives from ChinaTrade, an organization connecting Chinese and American businesses.

A few days in Shanghai made me realize that no matter what is happening in OUR economy, there is a LOT of business going on in China. There is even potential for new business for Klündt | Hosmer, as we may get the chance to create marketing materials for a Chinese manufacturer of solar water heaters looking to export their product to the U.S.

—Rick Hosmer, Principal/Creative Director

March 2009—SCVB, Design Source, Darin & Jean in Metro Magazine, KH Rypien MVP

Spokane Regional CVB Names Klündt | Hosmer Agency of Record

Klündt | Hosmer has been named the agency of record for the Spokane Regional Convention and Visitors Bureau after a lengthy review process that involved five other agencies. We are excited about this partnership and look forward to the process of creating comprehensive marketing initiatives to drive leisure and convention travel to the region through traditional media, video production, media planning and buying, SEO, viral and interactive media.

Design Source's New Website is Spot On

We recently launched a website for Design Source, an interior planning and design firm. Located in Spokane’s 1906 Firestation No. 9, Design Source has transformed the space through responsible and sustainable design into an inspiring studio. Red, the Fire Station’s Dalmatian mascot, helps to visually represent the firm and their tie to the historic landmark. The website features a bold and fun design reflecting their creative and innovative personality, along with an expansive portfolio section showcasing the work they’ve completed for both commercial and residential clients.

Metro Magazine Features Jean and Darin Klündt

The February issue of Spokane Metro Magazine featured the article, “Love @ Work” by Cheryl-Anne Millsap and Amy Clamper that focused on four area couples who work together. One of the couples highlighted was our own Jean and Darin Klündt. The article touched on the benefits and challenges found in working together. Jean and Darin both think that working together makes their marriage a healthier and richer experience. We think it makes our work at Klündt | Hosmer better too. The magazine can be subscribed to at spokanemetromag.com.

Wheatland Bank Launches New Web Site

Wheatland Bank has partnered with Klündt | Hosmer on brand, print and TV advertising projects for over 8 years. We have helped them establish a strong brand presence in Spokane and other branch locations throughout Washington. This past year, we were hired to redesign their web site, featuring an improved online banking system.

With a five star Bauer rating, Wheatland is recognized as one of the strongest banks in the country. Their new web site shines a light on that strength and their progressive online banking services by featuring customer testimonials and a new image that reflects the tagline, “We Think Differently.”

Charming Logo Design for a New Priest Lake Development

Klündt | Hosmer recently designed a logo for Kaniksu Sands, a waterfront vacation home and condo community currently under development on Priest Lake, Idaho.

The logo design presents a rustic, high quality image that exudes a northwest, outdoor flavor. It speaks to the pristine environment of the community and the recreational opportunities available at the lake. With its breathtaking location, inspired architectural design, and eco-sensitive construction, Kaniksu Sands is an innovative waterfront getaway perfect for anyone interested in enjoying the best northern Idaho has to offer.

We are currently working on a brochure and web site to promote sales and ownership in the Kaniksu Sands community, and will showcase those projects in the near future.

A Fun New Brand for Northwest Spokane Pediatrics

Klündt | Hosmer recently designed a new brand identity for Northwest Spokane Pediatrics. The design portrays the fun and adventurous atmosphere of their medical facility. The doctors and staff have a unique, active approach to pediatric care, including animal therapy for their young patients. The logo presents a welcoming, youthful look, giving the practice a fresh, professional feel.
Klündt | Hosmer recently developed a new visual identity for Storhaug Engineering, an established, yet blossoming firm, which has provided engineering services in the Spokane area since 1993. With a name as unique as Storhaug (almost as difficult to pronounce as Klündt!), our job was to communicate the Storhaug mission of providing professional services such as civil engineering, landscape architecture, planning and surveying to their clients with integrity, passion, attention to detail, and on-going service. Along with incorporating earth friendly colors, a unique typestyle and flowing lines, Storhaug Engineering has been rebranded with a mark that exudes excellence and reliability, which accomplishes their mission.

We got to experience the beauty of Christmas early this year when we worked with artist Cheryl Branz on the packaging design of her latest CD, “The Christmas Gift”. Cheryl is a very talented singer-songwriter, and this CD of holiday favorites is delightful. “The Christmas Gift” is presented in a tastefully-designed package featuring a blend of sophisticated style and sentimentality.

You can listen to cuts from the CD at Cheryl's website. The disc is available for purchase online.

What’s On Your List for 2009?

A web site that moves beyond two colors, an ugly gradient and lots of boxes. That was fine when brick cell phones were around, but we’ve moved on. (I take it back. That was never fine.)

Two words: pro bono.

To have my 401k back. 201k’s are nice, but not as shiny. Not to mention half the size.

A marketing budget hike, instead of a cut. And I don’t mean the great outdoors. (Better yet: TARP money.)

To invest in SEO.

Find out what SEO stands for.

Pay raise? What?

Another paperweight. Preferably one that doesn’t shatter when thrown.

To be featured in Dean Davis’ Shot of the Week email.

My own private jet. Since everyone is getting rid of theirs.

A logo that post-dates the 70’s. (The fact that they’re coming back should not apply here.)

A smart, hip, easy-to-load email campaign. None of this 4MB file size garbage.

A plaque.

I’m Dreaming of a Green Christmas. And a car that runs on nothing but lumps of coal and potting soil.

Some cool glasses like Darin’s. And razor sharp wit, like Rick.

My own parking spot. And a welcoming committee.

Bigger printing budgets!*

Beer:30 every day.

More email spam! Keep it coming. I love that stuff. Hey, gotta stay busy somehow.

Unlimited usage rights.

For my boss to support/fund my coffee habit.

To be a viral video phenom. Forget American Idol.

For Gonzaga to make it to the Final Four.

To (dare I say it?) RULE THE WORLD! [insert evil laugh]

November 2008—Pearson, Darin & Jean in NYC, Second Nature, Diane's Marathon

Booth Design Draws Crowds for Pearson Packaging

Last week, Pearson Packaging Systems attended Pack Expo International 2008 in Chicago, with the debut of their new booth designed by Klündt | Hosmer. More than 2,000 exhibiting companies from around the world presented their latest packaging solutions to nearly 45,000 attendees.

Ashley Martin, Klündt | Hosmer Account Executive, attended the show and reported back that “Pearson Packaging Systems’ exhibit space clearly differentiated themselves from their competition.” Pearson wanted to focus customers on their Robotics solutions. To drive home this message, we designed a booth and pre-show direct mail campaign that featured a fun, attention-grabbing concept, Robotic Invasion. The strong design and pre-show marketing drew people into the space. In fact, Pearson achieved a 68% increase of in-booth leads compared to their last show.

Congrats to our friends at Pearson!

New Brand for Second Nature

Klündt | Hosmer recently developed (under the direction of Marketing Director, Lori Armbruster) a new visual identity for Second Nature, an organization offering therapeutic wilderness programs for troubled youth and young adults. To communicate their tradition and philosophy, we designed a new visual brand (including a logo, letterhead package, brochures and folders) to represent Second Nature as professionally competent, clinically savvy, naturally beautiful, safe, hopeful, and peaceful. The new logo design consists of two leaves coming together to create a circle and a yin-yang form revealing the letter “S” to uniquely brand the organization.

Second Nature is nationally recognized as the leader in Wilderness Therapy, with programs in Oregon, Utah, and Georgia.

We are currently working on a new website for the organization that will debut early next year.

Diane Runs Marathon to Fight Cancer

Completing a marathon is much like designing a large publication, in the sense that you do it one step at a time. (Well, in reality it’s 52,000 steps in a row.) On October 5, I completed the Portland Marathon while running with Team in Training to raise money to fight blood cancers such as leukemia and lymphoma.

In addition to raising money for charity, getting out on the trail for a good run allows me to release the day’s tension, clear my head and makes me a better wife, mother and designer.

—Diane Mahan,
Klündt | Hosmer Art Director/Designer

Darin and Jean Attend Conference in NYC

Darin and I hit the Big Apple in October to attend GAIN: AIGA Business and Design Conference, where nationally recognized business and design leaders demonstrated powerful examples of design’s impact on business success. We learned how to generate greater ROI for clients through design, team collaboration and insight into building strong brands in an ever-changing economy. We are excited to enhance this focus of our work and deliver world-class design ROI to Spokane.

To see more photos of us in the Big Apple (the ones from after the conference was over), click here.

October 2008—GreenCupboards, Zag Shop, KH Fall Party

Go Green @ GreenCupboards.com

Following the design of a logo and tagline for local venture GreenCupboards, Klündt | Hosmer developed a robust e-commerce web site offering the company’s eco-friendly kitchen and bathroom products. Tom Simpson of Northwest Venture Associates, and a GreenCupboards investor stated that “as a start-up business, we were always treated as if we were among Klündt | Hosmer’s most important clients. The web site they designed is uniquely inviting, delightfully whimsical and intuitively functional—all criteria we were looking for.”

Stay tuned to GreenCupboards.com for the next wave of great products for your laundry room.

Visit their web site today, and use Klündt | Hosmer’s promotional code (kh10off) to receive 10% off your order!

Creating a Face for Zag Shop and Zagademics

Klündt | Hosmer recently created a new visual identity for the Official Gonzaga University Bookstore—Zag Shop—which has the most extensive selection of Gonzaga licensed apparel and gifts in Spokane. A visual brand extension was also created for Zagademics, a department within the Zag Shop that sells “Serious Books for Serious Scholars” at the best price.

Klündt | Hosmer is currently working on additional marketing materials, including new web sites for both Zag Shop and Zagademics where you will be able to purchase merchandise and books online.

Seeking the “Great Pumpkin” at Green Bluff

This month, staff and their families celebrated together at the annual Klündt | Hosmer Fall Festival hosted by Darin and Jean at their home in Green Bluff.

We all had a great time heading up to Knapp’s Farm in the back of Darin’s 1953 Chevy pickup, picking out just the right pumpkin and petting the animals with our families.

Small and big kids alike played on a giant slide (don’t ask Annie’s sister about her experience!) and enjoyed a wonderful, chilly afternoon eating and drinking around the warm fire.

To see more photos from this festive event (at least the ones we’re willing to show you), click here.

August 2008—Recession Advantage, Cancer Care Northwest, Dinner Party Website

How to Take Advantage of a Recession

You can't get away from the media talking about our declining economy. It's a common reaction to think you should hold back on your own branding and marketing plans until you "see where the economy is headed."

While fear of the unknown is understandable, cutting back on marketing during a downtime is actually the wrong move and a missed opportunity.

When other businesses rein back on their advertising and marketing, that's the BEST time to implement or increase your branding and marketing efforts. Research is filled with examples of companies who gained substantial market share and sales by increasing their advertising spending during recessionary times.

Unless your services or products are completely superfluous, consumers will continue to purchase what you and your competitors have to offer. But in a tighter economy, they will be more discerning regarding who they buy from. When your competition reacts fearfully and lessens their marketing efforts, they are clearing the stage for your marketing to be seen. When they cut back, your continuing brand messaging has a greater impact.

Before you allow a bad economy to hinder your business success, think about dialing up your company's branding and marketing strategies to enable your business to GROW even during a recession.

-Rick Hosmer

A New Image for Cancer Care Northwest

Klündt | Hosmer created a new visual identity package for Cancer Care Northwest, one of the region's leading cancer centers providing comprehensive, innovative, compassionate care by a team of integrated cancer specialists.

To communicate their patient-centered philosophy, Klündt | Hosmer designed a visual brand to convey hope and healing within a caring, integrated environment.

The design consists of a stylized logo mark made up of two leaves crossing in front of a burst of energy. The blue in the design exudes medical excellence and advanced innovative technology, while the green communicates healing and rejuvenation. The figure at the center reinforces the focus on the whole person, and the mark strongly implies that Cancer Care Northwest is a "place of healing"—physically and emotionally.

Klündt | Hosmer is currently working with Allison Benjamin, Marketing and Public Relations Director for Cancer Care Northwest, on the creation of additional marketing materials including a patient folder kit, marketing brochure, informational rack cards and direct mail piece. A new web site will also be in the making.

Wine and Dine Online with The Dinner Party

Klündt | Hosmer recently launched a web site for The Dinner Party, a purveyor of stylish dining accoutrements and wine in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The e-commerce site features an online wine collection spanning varietals and appellations from the Pacific Northwest, California and Europe. The site also features specially selected merchandise from artisans spanning the globe. Take a stroll through the site at thedinnerpartyshop.com and also stop in-person to visit George and Mary in their quaint shop at 3520 N. Government Way.
